Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 Diabetes – Twitter for Health!
One important function of the Ministry of Public Health consists of educating the public about good health practices. Type 2 diabetes is the main health problem; In 2050 one third of adults in the United States can be diabetes. This disease can be prevented by information designed to help people change their unhealthy habits.
Out of words to a large number of people can be equated with immunization campaigns that made smallpox in the past and today help control the number of new polio cases and other infectious diseases. In the past, the Ministry of Health usually relied on pamphlets and posters to disseminate their messages. Today more sophisticated and popular communication facilities allow them to reach more individuals at a lower cost.
Investigators at Washington University in St. Louis, USA, saw the use of Twitter as a method for the Ministry of Public Health to educate the public about diet and exercise for the prevention of developing type 2 diabetes.
Their study, published in the prevention of chronic disease journals in March 2013, includes 217 local public health departments with a Twitter account. One hundred twenty six, or 58 percent of them, twisted about diabetes. The larger department with more personnel and a much larger budget, departments that have active diabetes education programs, and departments in areas where diabetes are most common, tend to have the most twitter messages on the subject.
